Ways to Upcycle your Favorite T-shirt into Art

Sometimes, sadly, we get to the point when we can no longer wear our favorite t-shirts. But there are times when we get to this point and we’re not quite ready to let go. Your shirt might represent a special memory, have a graphic from your favorite concert, or maybe it’s just a really cool t-shirt. Well, we’re here to tell you this doesn’t have to be the end of the line. Here are the ways you can give a second life to your favorite t-shirt.

1.Clothesline of Memories

This project requires multiple t-shirts, maybe ones that don’t fit anymore or have some wear and tear.

What you’ll need: At least 6 feet of rope, clothespins (two per shirt), a hammer, and nails.

Step 1. Take your rope and cut to the desired length.

Step 2. Nail one end of the rope to your wall at the desired height

Step 3. Take the other end and stretch it across the wall, making sure it’s straight. Secure the other end to the wall.

Step 4. Figure out how you’d like to arrange your t-shirts and secure them to the line using your clothespins.

2.From Your Chest to Your Wall

Favorite t-shirts may become worn and faded, but luckily it’s easy to salvage the best parts and turn them into artwork. Luckily there’s a product out there that makes this super simple!

What you’ll need:

Step 1. Order online or try to find a T-Shirt Frame at your local art supply store, unwrap it from the packaging and lay on a flat surface

Step 2. Separate the top and bottom of your Shirt Frame

Step 3. Lay out your t-shirt over the bottom piece of the frame and decide what portion you’d like to frame

Step 4. Place the glass over your shirt and press the top frame over, stretching your shirt into the frame.

3.T-Shirt Yarn

If you’re into crochet, knitting, or weaving, this is the perfect project for you. This allows you to take old memories and quite literally weave new ones out of them.

What you’ll need: A t-shirt and scissors 3105 white

Step 1. Cut off your bottom hem

Step 2. Cut a straight line from armpit to armpit

Step 3. Starting at one edge, cut a 1½ inch strip, from the bottom to 1 or 2 inch from the top fold

Step 4. Repeat step 3, cutting strips all across the shirt

Step 5. Place the connect edge over your arm and make diagonal cuts from the first strip to the second

Step 6. Repeat step 5 with the other strips

If you find yourself with an empty closet after completing these projects, you can hop over to Spectra USA and shop some of your new favorite t-shirts, including v-neck, polyblend short sleeve, and raglan styles.
