WOW, THIS YEAR’S MLB HOME RUN DERBY JERSEYS ARE FANTASTICALLY RETRO

Big League Stew

With San Diego hosting the All-Star game in 2016, MLB has reached into the past for inspiration for this year’s Home Run Derby jerseys – and it found it, fantastically, in the early 1980s.

Yahoo Sports is giving you the first look at the jerseys the AL and NL participants in the derby will wear this year, which double as the workout jerseys for the day before the All-Star game. Here they are, in their yellow-and-brown glory:

If you remember what the San Diego Padres wore from 1980-1984, then these look familiar. There’s a contigency of Padres fans who want the team to go back its brown uniforms of the past, and while these uniforms are something different entirely, they tend to agree with that spirit: The old Padres look is fresh again in 2016.

The caps made to accompany the jerseys have the same look, so that means completely different caps for each team, with the team name in the front, the team’s own logo on one side and the All-Star logo on the other. Some teams look good, like the Padres. Other teams look a bit funky. But, players couldn’t possibly wear those jerseys with standard caps. These at least offer a complete look.

JERSEYS

The All-Star game jerseys themselves are pretty standard and sure not to ruffle traditionalists. Things are changed up a little bit in the caps, but nothing too extreme. They’re clean and distinguished, with no gimmicks, just different color tones and gold accents.

No word yet on when the various All-Star merchandise will be for sale to the public, but you can bet there will be plenty of time to get some before the game on July 12.
