The design is a black tank top with an American flag logo that Melissa Lay says has been her best-seller.She has been running a T-shirt company out of her garage in the town of Milwaukie since last May. Lay hand-makes T-shirts for people who order designs on Etsy or on her website.

However recently, she has seen a nearly identical T-shirt for sale at Target stores. Lay says Target’s version looks distressed and the T-shirt fabric is poorer quality.

“I don’t think I would have gotten a response at all if people hadn’t been standing by my side and pushing for this,” Lay said. ”I know a lot of people are advocating for me.”

Target did tell Lay in a statement that it takes intellectual property rights seriously and has begun an investigation. There is one upside to this dispute though, Lay says news coverage of her story has driven more traffic to her website.
