Campaigners criticised the store, saying that the t-shirt “promotes the impression that depression is a minor thing”
New Look has pulled a t-shirt from sale after mental health campaigners criticised the high street chain for ‘making light’ of depression.
The controversial fashion item boasts the words: ‘Post party depression’ across its chest area.
Upon seeing the t-shirt, campaigners criticised New Look for putting the t-shirt on sale.
Chief executive of mental health charity Penumbra Nigel Henderson said: “One in four people will experience a mental health problem at some point during their life, with depression being one of the most common forms of mental ill health.
“The language we use around mental health is incredibly important and everyone in society has a responsibility to take this issue seriously and not contribute to stigma and discrimination.
“I hope New Look will think much more carefully in future when deciding what slogans they use on their clothing.”
A regular customer of New Look also slammed the high street chain on social media over the 퉣5.99 t-shirt.
Gaya Ramanathan wrote on New Look’s Facebook page: “As much as I love New Look, a friend and I were pretty disgusted to see a ‘post party depression’ top in store today.
“Not only is this distasteful and offensive but also shows how mental illness is perceived.
“You wouldn’t post cancer pun t-shirts and this is no different.”
The store has since told Mirror Online that the item has been pulled from sale.
A spokeswoman said: “New Look has withdrawn the t-shirt from sale, both online and in store. We apologise for any offence caused.”
